Welcome back to JaredBodine.com Today Apple held their semi-annual press conference and unveiled some new technology. Here’s your 45-second review of the special event.

After CEO Tim Cook reminded us of Apples upcoming 40th birthday and justification of their government security standoff, he turned the time over to Sleepy McGee to lullaby us with environmental stuff.

The “Z”s continued through some health app stuff before Cook took over and starting talking about the hardware.

The Apple Watch isn’t seeing any upgrades, just new bands and colors, and a lower cost make early adopters chagrin.

AppleTV is still is not quite Roku. And iOS tweaks were minor, but CarPlay sounds promising.

The best news is the iPhone SE, a return to the old iPhone 5 form with upgraded guts, like the processor camera and NFC Apple Pay. Base price is $399 without a contract, free with some plans. The downside is that the clearance iPhone 5 cases will go back to full price.

A smaller iPad market led to a smaller iPad Pro. They are gunning for PC users by somehow making fun of the longevity of PC hardware. The base price starts at $599 and goes up from there. The existing models of iPad remain unchanged.

As an aside, a fond farewell was given to the old campus as the new UFO is nearly finished construction. I wonder if they’ll be laughed at for keeping that “old hardware” for more than 5 years…

Smart Garage Door Controller, MyQ, Unboxing, Install and Review…

Smart Garage Door Controller, MyQ, Unboxing, Install and Review…

In today’s review, we look at the popular smart garage door controller by Chamberlain, the MyQ Smart garage door controller. MSRP is $129.

In the above video, I didn’t go into too much detail on how I like product after install, because I had just installed it. The unit seems to be quite reliable. I wish the app let me do more than get an email when an event is triggered (like open for too long, or opened after hours). But I used my IFTTT account to create a rule where I get a phone call when an email from my garage comes in.

One odd issue I had was that when my car was in my garage, the signal to shut the door didn’t always get received. I found a solution online where rotating the unit on the mount 108deg would work, and it did. Never had an issue since. The use is straight forward and simple, yet very handy when needed.

To answer a question I’ve had from a few people, yes, the controller can do more than one door. If you have a 2 door garage, you need to add a second sensor to the second door, but the one unit can control both if you mount it right.

If you have further questions or would like to know more about the MyQ smart garage door controller, please feel free to ask.

I’m super excited this week’s tech podcast because I recently won a promotion from AfterShokz, a premier maker of bone conduction headphones. I won a free pair of their new TrekzTitanium headphones, as well as my choice of an iPad, Apple Watch, Xbox One, PS4 or WiiU. Seeing as how I have an iPad and apple watch, it was down to the next gen consoles.

CES 2016 Product Spotlight: Ricoh Theda 360 Degree Camera

This tiny wonder does what so many clunky other products attempt to do, capture high quality 360 degree photos in a simple way. For only $350 anyone can start making 1080p video and 14MP stills with no technological know-how. The images can be viewed back on any smartphone with free apps, on computers, and even uploaded to social media, like Facebook, will support the images.

Those wanting to use VR headsets will enjoy the content even more. And I know many Realtors who would love to get these into each listing they have. At first look, this may seem like a toy, but practical applications and even just plain fun uses, will continue to be found as this technology becomes more easily adopted by the masses. http://theta360.com
